What this site does

The facts about exposure live in public records. The requires water utilities to test for PFAS and to publish what they find. Federal courts publish the criteria that decide who qualifies for the ongoing litigation. Both are authoritative — and both are written for specialists: the test results sit in scientific databases, the eligibility criteria in court filings.

This site reads those records side by side and translates them. What was measured in a given water system, what peer-reviewed research says about those compounds, and what the currently filed eligibility criteria actually require — exposure history, qualifying diagnoses, documentation.

The review behind that translation is not casual. Teton Intake brings 17 years of engineering, , and quality assurance experience from -regulated industries — fields where every claim must trace back to a documented source, and where review is a documented step, not a courtesy. The same standard applies to every page published here.

PFAS in drinking water

PFAS — per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, often called "forever chemicals" — are a family of man-made compounds used for decades in firefighting foam, non-stick coatings, and industrial processes. They do not break down in the environment, and several of them can build up in the human body over time — a analysis found PFAS in the blood of 97% of Americans.

Independent health research, including the 's multi-year study of exposed communities, has found probable links between exposure and kidney cancer, testicular cancer, thyroid disease, and ulcerative colitis. Read those findings for what they are: the panel worked under a court settlement that set a "more likely than not" threshold rather than a strict causation standard, and later epidemiology has revisited some of the conclusions. We link the original reports so you can judge them yourself. In April 2024, the EPA finalized the first enforceable national drinking water limits for PFAS. Those limits are not settled law: the agency has kept the limits for PFOA and PFOS but proposed in 2026 to rescind those for four other PFAS and to extend compliance deadlines, and the rule is being challenged in court. We follow that link rather than freeze a number here.

Thousands of lawsuits are proceeding against PFAS manufacturers — the official case counts are public at the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation. Water utilities have already secured settlements — $10.3 billion from 3M in present value, up to $12.5 billion depending on how many systems take part, and $1.185 billion from DuPont, Chemours, and Corteva — money for testing and treating water systems, not payments to individuals. Personal injury claims by individuals are being litigated separately. What any single case may be worth depends on diagnosis, exposure history, and evidence — no one can promise you a number, and you should be skeptical of any site that does.

For firefighters

Firefighters face PFAS from more than one direction: firefighting foam used in training and suppression, and the protective turnout gear itself — testing found PFAS in the textiles of all three gear layers, including the moisture barrier. Peer-reviewed occupational exposure research has repeatedly found elevated PFAS levels in firefighters' blood.

The foam litigation is one of the largest in the country, with over 15,000 cases in federal court in South Carolina (MDL No. 2873). A separate, newer federal litigation over PFAS in turnout gear was consolidated in 2026 (MDL No. 3191) and is in its early stages.

Where our information comes from

We don't rule sources in or out by who published them. Any source can be used here if it survives our review — is the method transparent, can the finding be traced and verified, does it hold up against the primary records? That test applies to everyone: a government dataset gets checked the same way an industry study or an independent researcher does, and where the evidence is contested or still unsettled, we say so instead of picking a side for you.
